Making the most of your port day

A typical call gives you time for the essentials at a reasonable pace: walk the two-kilometre wall circuit early, then drop down to Stradun, the Rector's Palace and the Old Port. From there the choice is height or water: the cable car reaches the Srđ summit in under four minutes for the view over the roofs and Lokrum, or the ferry from the Old Port crosses to Lokrum itself in fifteen minutes for cloisters, peacocks and a swim. On a short call of six hours or less, skip Lokrum, do the walls at opening and keep lunch inside the Old Town so all-aboard never gets tight.

Docking

Most ships berth at the Gruž quay, about two kilometres from the Old Town. Smaller ships sometimes anchor off the walls and tender passengers into the Old Port directly

Port to Old Town

Ten minutes by taxi, Uber or the frequent Libertas buses from the terminal to Pile gate. Bus tickets are cheaper from the Tisak kiosk than on board

All-aboard

Be back at the gangway around 30 minutes before your posted departure, plus the ride back to Gruž. Confirm the exact time before you leave the ship

Walking the walls

The full circuit is just under two kilometres, one-way anticlockwise from the Pile entrance, and takes 90 minutes to two hours with no shade. Go at opening

Taxis

Taxis and Uber wait at the terminal. Agree or check the fare before setting off; Pile gate, the cable car base and Cavtat are the common runs

Beyond the walls

Lokrum is fifteen minutes by ferry from the Old Port, and the cable car reaches the Srđ summit in under four minutes. Both fit comfortably inside a port day
